The United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development is the occasion for launching the PRME LEADERS+20 Competition. We want to focus special attention on higher education and the development of future leaders in the context of the Rio+20 agenda.
ABOUT
The United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 20-22 June 2012.
The Rio+20 Conference marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.
The Rio+20 Conference is envisaged as a Conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of State and Government and other representatives. The Conference will result in a focused political document.
OBJECTIVES
1. Political commitment to sustainable development,
2. Assess the progress and implementation gaps in meeting already agreed commitments, and
3. Address new and emerging challenges.
THEMES
The Rio+20 Conference will focus on two themes:
- a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication
- the institutional framework for sustainable development
